DRAFT, in-house review, not legal advice. Items marked To be completed must be completed before publishing. Items marked To be completed implement describe behavior the code does not do yet; publish them only once they are built.
This notice explains what Math on Cue collects from children who practice with it, how we use that information, and the choices parents have. It is written for parents and guardians. Our full Privacy Notice covers information about parents.
Who we are
Math on Cue is operated by Aithnography LLC, an Idaho limited liability company. We are the only operator collecting or keeping children's information through Math on Cue.
- Postal address: 5501 N Armstrong Ave, Boise, ID 83704
- Phone: (208) 314-0259
- Email: To be completed Hank to supply/confirm, proposed privacy@mathoncue.com
Contact us at any of these with questions about your child's information.
How children use Math on Cue
Children never create accounts, sign in or give us an email address. A parent or legal guardian creates the account, confirms they are the child's parent or guardian, and gives consent (explained below). Only then can the parent add a child profile. Each profile has:
- a nickname the parent chooses (letters only, no numbers or email addresses)
- a stock picture chosen from six simple shapes
- the kinds of facts to practice (adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing)
We never ask for a child's real name, email, phone number, photo, school, birthday or location. Children cannot post anything publicly, chat or contact anyone in the app. We do not show ads to children.
What we collect while a child practices
| What | Example | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Which fact was shown and the answer given, turned into a number | "7 × 8": answered 56 | To check the answer |
| Whether the answer was right, or "I don't know" | correct | To decide what to practice next |
| How long the answer took | 2.4 seconds | Quick, correct answers show a fact is becoming automatic |
| When practice happened | Tuesday, about 5 minutes | Progress calendar and the review schedule |
| The review schedule for each fact | "review 7 × 8 again in 3 days" | Spaced review |
We keep this information with a random profile code. We do not use the nickname to identify the child.
Voice answers
When a child answers out loud, the phone, tablet or browser turns the speech into words on the device itself. Math on Cue receives only the words recognized for the answer (for example "fifty-six"). Our server turns them into a number, checks it and keeps only the number and the result. We never receive or store recordings of your child's voice, and we do not keep the recognized words. Voice answers are offered only on devices and browsers that can recognize speech on the device; elsewhere the child types instead. To be completed verify on each platform before publishing; see docs/privacy/consent-design.md §6.
The microphone is used only while a question is waiting for an answer. Your device will ask you for permission first, and you can turn it off at any time in the device's settings. Typing always works instead.
We do not offer cloud speech recognition (sending audio to a speech company) today. If we ever do, we will ask for your separate consent first, using a stronger verification method, and update this notice.
How we use children's information
We use it only to run the practice service:
- choose the next fact and schedule reviews
- check answers and give feedback
- show you your child's progress
- keep the service working and secure
We do not use children's information for advertising, to build marketing profiles, or to train AI models, and we do not sell or rent it.
We count, at the family level, whether a family has practiced at all and on how many days (for example "first practice" or "third practice day"). We use these counts to understand whether Math on Cue is helping families stick with practice. These counts never include a child's nickname, answers or results.
Who else receives children's information
We do not share children's information with third parties for their own use. We do not make it public.
We use these service providers only to run Math on Cue for us. They may not use the information for anything else:
- Amazon Web Services (AWS) stores and processes practice records on servers in the United States (Oregon region). To be completed confirm region at deployment.
- Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES), part of AWS, sends email to parents only. Emails never contain a child's answers or results.
Payments involve parents only. Stripe (website purchases), Apple and Google (app-store purchases), and RevenueCat (which tells us whether an app-store subscription is active) receive parent and billing information. They never receive children's information.
We may disclose information if the law requires it, for example in response to a valid court order, or to protect the safety and security of children, our users or the service.
Your choices and rights as a parent
You are in control. From Parent space → Privacy & child data (or by contacting us) you can:
- Review everything we hold about your family, including each child's practice history, by downloading a copy (Parent space → Download your data).
- Change or delete a child's profile. Deleting a profile removes the profile and all of that child's practice history.
- Stop further collection by revoking consent. Practice stops right away, including any answer in progress, and nothing more is collected. Existing progress stays until you delete it or until the time limits below.
- Delete your whole family account. For security, we first send a code to your email. Deletion signs out every device, cancels a website subscription immediately, and removes your account, every child profile and all practice history.
When we email to confirm your consent, the message also tells you how to revoke it. You can also reply to that email or contact us using the details above. To be completed make sure that inbox is monitored.
We will not ask a child to give more information than the practice needs.
How long we keep children's information (our data retention policy)
| Information | Why we keep it | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Child profile (nickname, picture, fact choices) and practice history | To schedule reviews and show progress, which depends on history | Until you delete it, or automatically 12 months after your family last practiced if you have no active plan (we email you at least 30 days before) |
| The same, after you revoke consent | So you can change your mind without losing progress | Deleted 90 days after you revoke, unless you give consent again |
| Short-lived question records (which fact was shown, the result) | To accept each answer exactly once | About 2 days, then removed automatically (AWS may take a few more days to finish removal) |
| Recognized words from a spoken answer | To check the answer | Not kept: used once and discarded |
| Voice audio | (Not collected) | Never received |
| Encrypted backups of our database | Disaster recovery | Up to 35 days, then they age out. We never use backups for anything else |
We delete information so it cannot be retrieved in the normal course of business, and we protect it while deleting it.
Security
Practice records are stored encrypted by our hosting provider and sent only over encrypted connections. Access is limited to people who need it to run the service. A parent PIN or a fresh email code protects the parent area on shared devices. To be completed confirm encryption at rest and TLS in infrastructure; adopt the written information security program required by the COPPA Rule.
Changes to this notice
If we change how we collect, use or share children's information in a way that matters, we will email you and ask for your consent again before the change applies to your children. The version above changes whenever this notice does, and we record which version you consented to.
